Self-Fulfilling

The world appears yellow to jaundiced eyes

That formerly visioned in myriad hues

As we preconceive, so we realize

The mind sees forever, the brain clouds and dyes

All it ‘holds in a tone that reflects its own mood

The world appears yellow to jaundiced eyes

Though colours be darkened by rain-cloudy skies

The optimist sees more the in-between blue

As we preconceive, so we realize

And seldom do we look afresh and revise

A belief or perception or closely-held view

The world appears yellow to jaundiced eyes

Like Procrustes, we each cut ourselves down to size

So we fit to the roles that constrain me and you

As we preconceive, so we realize

Enslaved by our prejudice all through our lives

We scorn every urging to see things anew

The world appears yellow to jaundiced eyes

As we preconceive, so we realize
